#IWD2020

I am a woman in the music industry.

Over the years, people have told me: what my music needed to sound like; how I had to look a certain way; what I needed to wear on stage/camera; not to worry about the “technical stuff”; just try to look “pretty” and sing.

Guess what - NONE of that made me happy. It made me feel like I was suffocating and day-by-day I was losing my confidence as an artist and more importantly as a human being.

Today on International Women's Day - I want to share with you that I had to really fight to take total creative control of the music that I wanted to make and the image that I wanted to portray. I did this by stepping behind the scenes and directing every aspect of my career from: co-writing; co-production; playing instruments; arranging and recording. Through this journey of self-discovery and self-empowerment - I found my VOICE. The only way I was able to accomplish this was by surrounding myself with people who treated and supported me as their equal and didn’t let gender bias dictate their actions.

Let’s celebrate today by honouring and supporting all the women around us and thanking everyone who takes action for equality. Let’s demonstrate for this next generation of women - that we support each other, that we are gender equals and that we have a voice. xoxo 💋
